Contract for the Modernization of Lightning Detection System

30-10-2019. Elsis TS signed a contract with the Lithuanian Hydrometeorological Service under the Ministry of Environment (LHMT) for the modernisation of the lightning detection system.

Currently, the LHMT meteorological observation network operates a low-frequency lightning detection system from the manufacturer Vaisala Oyj (Finland), which allows the detection of low-frequency cloud-to-ground (hereinafter – CG) lightning discharges (the accuracy of the location of the CG discharges is currently 500 m in the territory of the Republic of Lithuania), determine the location, polarity and intensity of CG discharges, group individual discharges in real time and display repeatability values, and transmit and display data in real time for analysis.

The lightning detection system currently consists of three Vaisala LS7000 sensors installed at the Biržai, Šilutė and Varėna meteorological stations and a Vaisala TLP100 central processing unit which processes and analyses the primary data sent by the sensors.

This contract will upgrade three existing sensors and the lightning detection CPU system, as well as install and integrate a fourth sensor at the Raseiniai automatic meteorological station. The work will allow the Lithuanian Hydrometeorological Service to monitor data more accurately and reliably and to avoid incomplete coverage of the territory of Lithuania in the event of an unforeseen failure of any station.

The contract was concluded within the framework of the European Union Structural Funds-funded project “Upgrading of the Hydrological and Meteorological Observation Network” No 05.1.1-APVA-V-004-01-0007.

The contract is worth more than EUR 167 000 excluding VAT and the work is scheduled to be completed by 03.05.2020.
