Acoustic telemetric equipment for salmon fish population study in Lithuania

Client:

Fisheries Service under the Ministry of Agriculture of the Republic of Lithuania

Period:

2014/07 – 2014/10

Project description:

With the beginning of autumn, Division of Pisciculture of the Lithuanian Fisheries Service in cooperation with the researchers from the Nature Research Centre started marking salmonids and reconstructing fish passes. Acoustic transmitters will be used for marking for the first time in Lithuania. UAB Elsis TS will supply the acoustic telemetry equipment for the project.

Previously, radio telemetry was used in Lithuania, however, this year the Fisheries Service acquired new acoustic telemetry equipment, which is becoming increasingly popular throughout the world every day. Transmitters of this type can be used in both fresh waters and seas or oceans with absolutely different salinity of water. They provide extremely accurate data. This is a new technologic step forward.

Receivers will be placed in several locations: below a fish pass to capture a fish swimming therein, also, inside a fish pass itself in order to find out how long a fish stays in it, and behind it to see how long it takes for a fish to adapt after a fish pass in the water body.

Along with acoustic receivers, internal fish markers are also used for research; they are implanted inside a fish during the operation, and send signals to receivers. 30 salmonids will be marked for research. They will be observed for three weeks.

The conducted research allows monitoring changes in population of fish in Lithuanian rivers and lakes. According to specialists, research conducted last year showed that the number of fish in Lithuanian waters has been increasing.

Meteorological weather radar

Client:

Lithuanian Hydrometeorological Service under Ministry of Environment

Period:

2013/09 – 2014/09

Project description:

Elsis TS UAB successfully completed the project with Lithuanian Hydro-Meteorological Service (LHMS) under the Ministry of Environment for the acquisition and installation of a new weather radar. The project work included construction of radar tower, installation of all interior and exterior systems (security, video surveillance, fire alarm, and telecommunications), supply and installation of weather radar technical equipment and software, customer trainings. Radar manufacturer – Vaisala Oyj (Finland).

The radar will present precise data on precipitation, the intensity and type thereof. It can also determine many processes, various hydro-meteorological events, forecast weather conditions for sea and air ports, hurricanes, hail, air mass changes, etc. This new weather radar is aimed at monitoring precipitation and short-term weather projections, thus enabling national weather forecasters to make more accurate precipitation forecasts.

This is a second radar used by LHMS, which will complement the first one located in Laukuva. Information about the atmosphere is collected within the radius of 250 km, however, the greater the distance the lower is the accuracy of the data. The new radar was constructed in Trakų Vokė, thus allowing to monitor precipitation movements in the eastern Lithuania, Poland and Belarus, and making more accurate very short-term forecasts of the entire Lithuania and its surroundings.

The contract implemented executing the project “Modernization of Lithuanian meteorological observation network. Acquisition and installation of weather radar”, which is funded from the 2007-2013 European Regional Development Funds and state budget funds of the Republic of Lithuania.

LITGRID system control centre upgrade

Client:

AB “Litgrid”

Period:

2013/07 – 2014/01

Project description:

Elsis TS UAB implemented the project during which the system control centre equipment of Litgrid AB, the electricity transmission system operator, was upgraded. During the project implementation, the ELSIS TS installed a new Clarity LED3 Series video wall designed by “Planar Systems” consisting of 36 video cubes instead of the out-of-date operational video wall. Also, new working stations as well as electricity supply, uninterrupted supply and ventilation systems were installed for operators working 24/7. Installation of new technologies resulted in enhanced safety and reliability of the system control centre.

The video wall displays data not only from Lithuania, but also from surrounding power systems. Operators are able to monitor real-time volumes of electricity generated in power plants and wind mills, operating electricity transmission lines as well as the ones disconnected for repair, transformer substations and switchgears, system frequency, import data, electricity demand and consumption. In 2016, when power links between Sweden and Poland start operating, the video wall will enable displaying data of Polish and Swedish power systems.

The video wall serves as an information field which generalises data. In the event of emergency, automated units transfer signals to the general system which processes information received not only from the Lithuanian electricity transmission network, but also from other power systems the Lithuanian power grid is connected to. Information displayed in one or more places helps make decisions more promptly and organise the system control activities more efficiently.

Meteorological observation system modernization in Vilnius and Palanga airports

Client:

Lithuanian Hydrometeorological Service under the Ministry of Environment

Period:

2011/04 – 2012/09

Project description:

Modernization of meteorological observation systems in Vilnius and Palanga airports will enable a more accurate evaluation of weather conditions for the routes above the Lithuanian airspace, making of forecasts of local meteorological conditions for a particular flight, continuous observation of meteorological conditions in the airport area, expeditious information of aviation consumer, as well as exchange of available information with other services. Implementation of the project will enable to increase the flight safety, optimize and improve the work of overground services, as well as work out more accurate and more efficient flight plans.

For the pilots avoid risky phenomena, it is highly important to predict the changes in weather conditions. For example, unexpected entering continuous rain may block the opening of the air pressure receiver, thereby forming rather high electrical potentials and icing up the aircraft. Implementation of the project will enable the flight control centers, aircraft pilots, weathermen, etc. to present more reliable, more exhaustive, and more expeditious meteorological information, enabling to ensure higher safety of the flights.

Combined electric energy supply system – wind turbine power plant and solar panel

Client:

AB “Lietuvos dujos” (Lithuanian gas)

Period:

2011/10 – 2012/03

Project description:

UAB ELSIS TS has successfully completed the project involving the installation of advanced wind turbines in addition to ordinary wind power stations and solar panels. The innovative system allows saving large costs necessary for supplying electricity to remote objects that are often hard to access.

Advanced wind turbines are distinguished for the minimum wind speed required to produce electricity. This is an excellent alternative for companies based in remote locations, telecommunications, military and other objects as the supply of electricity to non-urbanised areas is problematic or economically unfeasible. Meanwhile, wind turbines do not require large installation or maintenance costs. The minimum wind speed is sufficient for these wind turbines; they are built in low places, and they can also be rotated by low-lying wind currents that are variable in direction. The compactness of wind turbines of this type allows constructing them closer to other buildings, which also reduces installation costs.

The long-term practice has shown that traditional solar-wind turbines do not always ensure a sufficient amount of electricity. This is particularly relevant in the winter time, when the use of traditional solar-wind turbines becomes ineffective due to constant nebulosity, snow, or freezing rain.

In 2011 the Company designed and installed in an industrial object an advanced system in which the required amount of electricity is generated by highly-efficient new-generation wind turbines operating together with solar panels. The efficiency of these wind turbines is 30-50% higher, if compared with analogous traditional wind turbines operating under the same weather conditions. The biggest difference can be seen when weak winds of about 5 metres per second prevail. This was proved by the trial operation of the system during the winter period.

The data on electricity generation collected by ELSIS TS have revealed that the wind turbines fully and uninterruptedly met the planned or required electricity demands at any time around the clock and under any weather conditions.
